Article

Recently, Senior Fellow Noam Schimmel wrote an article for Times Higher Education, encouraging the use of photography as a tool to enhance academic study in the fields of international affairs and human rights.

In the article, titled “Using Photography as a Teaching Tool in Human Rights and International Affairs,” Noam writes that, when supplementing written materials, photography can be a crucial element in helping students understand subject matters that may otherwise feel distant and abstract.

In the article, Noam also offers insights in how to properly choose the right photography that best fits lessons and helps in the teaching process: “It is essential to take care providing students with photography from a range of sources to allow diversity of perspectives; to ensure that photos are not exploiting their subjects; and that they are sourced from organisations that adhere to ethical codes of photojournalism and high standards of ethical integrity in reporting.”
