Bio:

Katherine hails from South Central Los Angeles, a community rich in diversity yet marred by violence. As the daughter of immigrants, she developed a tireless work ethic, learned to navigate contentious spaces with empathy, and yearned to advance opportunities for others. While attending UC Berkeley, she grew fascinated by shared experiences of resilience across cultures, which prompted her to work on asylum cases, mentor at-risk youth, and organize academic enrichment activities for marginalized communities. Following graduation, Katherine served as an Operation HOPE fellow, where she created financial literacy curricula and led financial empowerment workshops for victims of domestic violence. At the National Head Start Association, Katherine lobbied the federal government to fund early childhood education for low-income families. She subsequently worked as an educational policy researcher for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, a consortium representing the nation’s public historically black colleges and universities. As a George J. Mitchell Scholar, Katherine obtained an LLM in gender, conflict and human rights law. She is also a recipient of the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, which supported her master’s at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and an MBA at the school of her choice. At present, Katherine is the Deputy Director of Libraries Without Borders, an international nonprofit committed to expanding access to information around the world. Through this role, she works closely with communities to create pop-up libraries and learning spaces where local residents, nonprofits, social enterprises, artists, activists and educators can create, lead and participate in educational and capacity-building programs. She is currently spearheading an initiative examining the role that libraries can play in post-disaster recovery efforts and long-term capacity-building in Puerto Rico.
