Ernestine Cath

HIA Program:

Netherlands Netherlands 2014

Ernestine is currently working as a barista at an organic cafe in a permaculture community in Australia. Before her move overseas, she finished her studies in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London (SOAS) focusing on gender, migration, medical anthropology and theories of power. During her degree she was part of a group called SOAS Detainee Support Group who work in solidarity with immigration detainees in the UK and campaign for the abolition of immigration detention. In 2013, she spent a year coordinating the campaigning/casework group full-time whilst also organizing a summer course for youth from Europe and the Middle East in Turkey on critical thinking and interpersonal dialogue. Ernestine hopes to learn more about the Netherlands, which she left at the age of 16, to attend the Mahindra United World College of India. She is unsure of where the future will take her, however, she is determined to continue to learn from different queer, anti-racism, feminist and social and economic justice communities as well as organizing in the Netherlands and abroad.
