In 2009, Chelsea spent her entire sophomore year living and studying in Guatemala where she volunteered with residents living near and off of Guatemala City's municipal dump, the largest of its kind in Central America. While there she also taught biology to high schoolers in an after school program in Jocotenango as well as a night English course for adults (2010). Once she returned home to Tucson, Arizona, she became more involved with the activism surrounding the humanitarian crisis of death and disappearance taking place on the border. After graduation, she worked on a Department of Justice funded study which examined the protocols and practices for the handling of undocumented border crosser remains along the US-Mexico border.In 2013, Chelsea was a co-founder of the Colibrí Center for Human Rights, where she is the Deputy Director.
