Office of California State Senator Ben Allen–Humanity in Action Fellowship provides a Senior Fellow the opportunity to work on the frontlines of public policy and legislation in California. The Senior Fellow will work in the office of California State Senator Ben Allen – a Humanity in Action Senior Fellow (Netherlands 1999). The full-time, three-month summer fellowship will take place in Los Angeles with travel to Sacramento.

Senator Allen represents the 26th Senate District, comprised of the Westside, Hollywood and coastal South Bay communities of Los Angeles County. Senator Allen currently serves as Chair of the Senate Education Committee and the legislature's Joint Committee on the Arts. He is a member of the Senate Committees on Elections and Constitutional Amendments, Natural Resources and Water, and Transportation and Housing.  He co-chairs the Environmental Caucus and is Vice-Chair of the Jewish Caucus. 

The Senior Fellow will work under the supervision of Samuel Liu, the Deputy Chief of Staff, on policy research and community engagement on a wide range of issues, including environmental sustainability, education, healthcare, transportation and electoral law. The Fellowship will provide Senior Fellows critical exposure to the legislative process, California politics, constituent services, and a wide variety of critical issues.  

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Utilize various resources, such as legal, legislative and social science writings, to conduct policy research
  • Develop a strong knowledge of priority issues and policy areas 
  • Prepare talking points, press releases and memoranda
  • Answer constituent correspondence and phone calls
  • Assist in resolving constituent issues
  • Build a social media presence for the office on policy issues and manage social media platforms
  • Accompany staff to legislative meetings and community events

Eligibility and Application

All Humanity in Action Senior Fellows who have completed their Action Projects (or equivalent) are eligible to apply. Humanity in Action encourages those interested in gaining experience in state-level legislation, political campaigns and community engagement to apply.
