Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any tips for finding Fellows or Senior Fellows who may be interested in my project idea?

Yes. Be sure to take advantage of the Bulletin Board on HIA Connect. You can post your idea there and tag it with "action projects." Your idea will then be visible to the Humanity in Action community and delivered by email to all the Fellows and Senior Fellows who subscribe to follow action projects.

You may also wish to post a message on the Humanity in Action Facebook page.

I'm writing a proposal with several other Fellows/Senior Fellows. Who should submit our application?

Groups should submit only one proposal for their project. You should select one representative from your group to submit your proposal and be the key communicator with Humanity in Action. The application form provides you with an opportunity to list all the members of the group.

I received a grant from Humanity in Action in a preceding grant competition. Can I apply again?

Yes. You can apply for funding for a new project. You might also apply for a follow-up or for a continuation of a project that you have already implemented.

My project can't be completed before the end of December 2017. Can I still apply?

Please get in touch with us to discuss the timeline you have in mind for your project proposal (email: grants@humanityinaction.org).

I have doubts as to whether my project idea or its methodology is consistent with this call for applications. How can I clarify that my idea is acceptable?

Please do not hesitate to contact us (email: grants@humanityinaction.org) to discuss this before submitting your proposal. We are happy to speak to you about your idea and give you advice about your proposal.

My funding proposal is for an art project. Will Humanity in Action consider such a project eligible?

Yes, we also fund projects that rely on artistic measures to bring about societal change.

My project proposal explores issues and topics that are new or less familiar to Humanity in Action. Will this decrease the likelihood of my project being selected for funding?

No. This call for applications is intentionally broad in its outlook and we encourage you to submit proposals for projects that address all issues and topics that are linked to the mission of the organization, irrespective of how prevalent they have been in Humanity in Action’s past engagements.

What's required to apply?

Please click here to see the complete application form. Before you apply, you should be sure to develop a plan and preliminary budget for your project. Key questions to keep in mind when considering your proposal include:

  • Why is there a need for your project?
  • Whom will you affect through your work?
  • What do you intend to achieve?
  • How will you accomplish your objectives?
  • How does this project strengthen cooperation with the Humanity in Action network?

How should I create a preliminary budget for my proposal?

Your budget should anticipate the main expenses associated with your project. For instance, if you intend to host a training workshop, you should consider the cost of renting space, printing PR and workshop materials, renting technical equipment, paying for speakers or trainers, purchasing snacks and drinks, etc. The costs do not need to be exact but they should represent reasonable estimates.

Be sure to consider volunteer (i.e., "in-kind") contributions too when developing your budget. For instance, can your local community center donate a room? Will a local cafe donate drinks? Might someone in your network with expertise on the topic in question be willing to conduct the workshop on a pro-bono basis? If you list these expenses in your budget, please indicate on the application form that you have secured donations for these items.

If you have further questions, please reach out to us at grants@humanityinaction.org.

If I'm applying with other Senior Fellows, can we request more than €4,500?

No. The maximum grant is €4,500 per project, not €4,500 per applicant.

I participated in the 2016 Fellowship. Can I apply?

Yes, you are very welcome to apply if you have completed your action project by the time you submit your application. Please note that we will not award grants for projects that you intend to develop as your individual action project. If you are in doubt, please contact us at grants@humanityinaction.org.

I am a Humanity in Action Senior Fellow, but I have not completed my Action Project

Generally, this grant competition is open to Senior Fellows who have completed their Action Projects by the application deadline for this grant competition. If you are a Senior Fellow and have not completed your Action Project, but wish to be considered for funding, you may get in touch with us at grants@humanityinaction.org to discuss your situation on an individual basis. Humanity in Action may in exceptional cases allow Senior Fellows without completed Action Projects to apply so long as they have shown serious progress or are able to offer legitimate reasons for why this is the case.

I'm not an Humanity in Action Senior Fellow. Can I apply for a grant?

No, unfortunately this opportunity is limited only to alumni of the organization, i.e. past participants of the Humanity in Action Fellowship or other Professional Fellowships that we offered. If you are collaborating with a Humanity in Action Fellow or Senior Fellow, however, this person may apply for funding for your joint project.
