Article

Yiannis Christou studied Theology and Translation and was certified by the Council of Europe in the field of Roma mediation in 2011. He started to work officially as a mediator in May 2010, while at the same time volunteering at the Byzantine Museum in Athens, where he assisted with Roma children visiting the premises. Around the same time, he was also engaged in the program Education of Roma Children – under implementation by the Kapodistrian University of Athens, as a school mediator until October 2012.

From October 2012 to April 2013, Yiannis Christou interned at the Council of Europe Development Bank, Department of Studies and International Relations, in Paris, France. During his internship, besides obtaining knowledge regarding the concept, structure and operation of the Bank, he participated in high level meetings and shared insights on all matters of the Bank with regard to Roma issues, and did research on National Roma Integration Strategies of most EU Member States.

From October 2013 until now, Yiannis Christou has been engaged by the Council of Europe to work in the ROMED 2 Program “Democratic Governance and Community Empowerment through Roma Mediation” as National Project Officer for Greece. Recently, along with six other Roma experts, he established the first Roma NGO in Greece by the name “Hellenic Roma Action” (abbreviated title: HEROMACT). The organization has undertaken a project aiming to establish an Association of Greek Roma Scientists.
