Oleksandra (Sasha) Smyrnova was a participant in the 2015 Humanity in Action Berlin Fellowship. In Ukraine she completed her first degrees in the field of teacher training and later extended her studies at the University of Arkansas. Sasha has eight years of teaching practice, both in her home country and abroad. She has also been involved in youth work since 2010, when she became part of the American-Ukrainian Culture Exchange Camp for youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds. Her most significant experience as a youth worker was at the Access Program, a two-year project for teenagers with special needs, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. She was working with a group of Kyiv students with cerebral palsy, teaching General English and Culture studies. To further her knowledge, Sasha completed a distant-learning scholarship program on Special Education at Oregon University. Currently Sasha lives in Leipzig, where she is doing a long-term volunteering project. She also studies Arabic and German. For next year, she considers to pursue a postgraduate degree in social studies in Britain.
