At the young age of four, Helay fled dangerous conditions in her homeland Afghanistan and sought refuge in the Netherlands. Having experienced hardships early in life, she took an interest in issues of inequality and poverty. She obtained a degree in Psychology with a focus on cultural psychology from Leiden University. Her field focuses on how cultures reflect and shape the psychological processes of their members and how this influences society in turn. Currently, she volunteers at OGJG giving social psychology workshops to eldery homes and public libraries. In these workshops, Helay discusses racism and stereotypes in hopes of encouraging open, respectful and critical dialogue on these difficult topics. Next, she hopes to pursue a career in global health by tackling inequalities found in healthcare systems worldwide.
