Thomas Alexander Aleinikoff (J.D., Yale; B.A., Swarthmore) is University Professor and Director of the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility at The New School. Among many previous appointments he has been Deputy High Commissioner in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva (2010-15); Executive Vice President at Georgetown and Dean and Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center; and co-chair of the Immigration Policy Review Team for the Presidential transition of Barack Obama. Alex has written widely in the areas of immigration and refugee law and policy, transnational law, citizenship, race, and constitutional law. His books include Semblances of Sovereignty: The Constitution, the State, and American Citizenship (Harvard University Press, 2002) and Migration and International Law (Associated Press, 2003). He is currently at work on a book tentatively titled The Arc of Protection: Reforming the International Refugee Regime.
