Populism, Nationalism and Transatlantic Relations: New Realities, New Tensions

International Conference in Berlin.

At a sold-out event, over than 250 Fellows, Senior Fellows, Board members, supporters and friends of the organization convened in Berlin to examine the rise in nationalism, populism, xenophobia and extremism in Europe and in the United States as well as strategies for responsible citizenship.

The Eighth Annual Humanity in Action International Conference took place from June 22-25, 2017 in Berlin, Germany.

The 2017 International Conference explored the rise in nationalist sentiment, xenophobic rhetoric and political extremism across Europe and the United States, and the resultant challenges to transatlantic relations and domestic policies on both sides of the Atlantic.

The past years have born witness to populist and extremist political narratives gaining popular support in Europe and the United States. These events were united not only in their anti-establishment rhetoric. Rather, they were united in their employment of discourses that are premised on nationalistic, anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic – and ultimately anti-minority positions.
