Magda Szarota, disability scholar and advocate, HIA Poland Board Member and Feminist Alliance for Rights Steering Committe Member, on the invitation of the Members of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament made an expert and activist intervention during an inter-parliamentary committee meeting (held in Brussels and online, 30.11.2021) to mark the International Day on the Elimination of Violence against Women.
She discussed the current state of affairs in policy and practice in focused areas of gender-based violence as well as offered evidence-based and actionable policy recommendations.

Moreover, thanks to the research done by Women Enabled International and this year’s The Official 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign, Magda Szarota highlighted the necessity to systematically redress the ‘pandemic of femicide’ which is still a great societal taboo.

The other invited expert was Ana Peláez Narváez, Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women of United Nations, Vice-President of the European Disability Forum, Vice-President of CERMI Women’s Foundation.
Both experts also stressed that perspectives of girls and women with disabilities and the know-how of women with disabilities organizations/collectives need to be amplified in policy-making settings. This postulate was strongly reaffirmed by the Polish MEP, Sylwia Spurek.
