We are thrilled to announce that Humanity in Action’s animated short film Two Trees in Jerusalem is an official selection for the esteemed American Documentary and Animation Film Festival (AmDocs Festival). The 11th edition of the Annual AmDocs festival will take place both online and live in Palm Springs, California, between April 7-11, 2022.

Two Trees in Jerusalem

The film, co-produced by our Executive Director Judith Goldstein and Irene Braam, Executive Director of the Bertelsmann Foundation, is based on the same-name book by Humanity in Action Germany’s honorary chair, Cornelia Schmalz-Jacobsen.

Two Trees in Jerusalem shares the remarkable history of Eberhard and Donata Helmrich, who together saved the lives of hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust. The story is narrated by Cornelia Schmalz-Jacobsen, the couple’s daughter, who was called into her parents’ confidence as a child of six, and was imbued with an inner-strength that guided her work decades later as a journalist, politician, and Federal Comissioner for Foreigners’ Affairs.

Two Trees in Jerusalem is the second film in the trilogy TRACES-Portraits of Resistance, Survival and Resolve. It premiered at the Miami Jewish Film Festival in January 2022. It is an official selection of the 11th Annual AmDocs Film Festival, alongside the third film of the trilogy, My Father’s War.
Last year, the first film of the trilogy “Voices in the Void”, was also selected for the Festival.
