We are thrilled to announce that Humanity in Action’s animated short film My Father’s War was selected as Best Animation Film at the Cannes Shorts Festival.

My Father’s War is the third part of Humanity in Action’s documentary animation film trilogy TRACES- Portraits of Resistance and Survival, co-produced by our Executive Director Judith Goldstein and Irene Braam, Executive Director of the Bertelsmann Foundation.

Written by Samuel George and directed by Juan Pablo de Gamboa, My Father’s War brings to life the experiences of Peter Hein and his son David.  As a Jewish toddler in the Netherlands in the 1940s, Peter is separated from his parents and whisked from hiding place to hiding place to escape deportation. Decades later, David forges his own path after his father’s mental health buckles under the weight of his memories.

The Cannes Shorts Festival jury selection described My Father’s War as “an amazing project which captivated our jury with its uniqueness and originality of its message.
