Article

An educator, mentor, and friend of Humanity in Action, Joan Ringelheim, wrote a book titled Companions: The Strange and the Familiar. The book shares the story of her life and career, while highlighting her successes, seeming failures, and emotional and physical challenges.

“[This book] contains so many chapters that are important to us such those focused on teaching in the academy, visiting Sarajevo after the genocide, and women in the Holocaust.” – Judith Goldstein

Companions: The Strange and the Familiar contains so many chapters that are important to us such those focused on teaching in the academy, visiting Sarajevo after the genocide, and women in the Holocaust. Many of you may remember visiting and exploring the Museum under her amazing direction.

Fellows and Senior Fellows were invited to a conversation with Joan on Sunday, May 23rd about her chapter on teaching philosophy at DePauw University. She plunged into the subject with a particular focus on Black history and Antisemitism—subjects that are so relevant today.

In preparation for this talk, Fellows and Senior Fellows were asked to read this chapter of her book.

The event was very informative on the topics of racial and social justice. We are very glad to have hosted this event with Joan before her passing in October 2021.
