Senior Fellow's vaccine distribution work in Ghana highlighted by The New York Times

Senior Fellow Owusu Akoto was recently featured in The New York Times for his contribution in delivering and distributing the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in Ghana. Owusu’s company, FreezeLink, helped the Ghanaian government keep 600,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine at proper temperature before distribution. Owusu was initially inspired to create FreezeLink to combat food waste in West Africa. However, since FreezeLink’s founding, the company’s “cold chain” has also distributed various vaccines, most recently for COVID-19. Owusu is also working with a drone company Zipline, which aims to help deliver the vaccine to rural parts of Ghana.

Ghana was the first country to receive vaccines as part of the global COVAX initiative, which aims to deliver two billion vaccines during 2021. So far, approximately 10 million vaccines have been distributed in 11 countries in Africa.
