In September 2021, Landecker Fellow Tara Dickman facilitated a workshop to help Amnesty International France members work through the first steps in their long-term transition towards becoming an anti-racist organization.

Following the International Secretariat’s decision to adopt an anti-racist approach in the face of both civil society and internal mobilizations, Amesty International France members will now have to go through a series of trainings to better understand systematic racism. The training sessions will bring awareness on the way racism impacts the organization’s culture, practices, campaign and most importantly, on the way it can become part of the solution.

Tara’s workshop was designed to help French Amnesty International members uncover blind spots which may be both producing violence within the movement and contributing to unconscious resistance to anti-racism work, and apprehend the long term anti-racist trainings as an opportunity to grow as individuals as well as realign as members of a Human Rights organization

“Becoming not only a non-racist organization, but also an anti-racist organization.”

Tara is one of thirty Landecker Democracy Fellows. This fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
