Article

Landecker Fellow Laura Westring published an article in The Scotsman on how businesses and the economy can shift for the better. In  the article, she discusses her thoughts and journey of researching and studying the economy and our relationship with it. Key problems such as issue voting and the failure of practical thinking were identified. She also explores responsible and sustainable business concepts, businesses that are environmentally and ethically conscious. In the article, Laura describes the possible shift in the economy towards impact focus businesses, companies that care not only about the short term bottom line but their impact, whether it be environmental or social. As people become more and more conscious of their consumer footprint, their support will shift to the environmentally and socially conscious companies that currently hold a perhaps niche part of the economy. This especially applies to investors– if investors change their behavior, then the rest of society will as well. Read the full article here.

Laura is one of thirty Alfred Landecker Democracy Fellows.
