On Wednesday June 2, 2021 Landecker Democracy Fellow Iason Apostolopoulos joins the virtual panel discussion “Barriers beyond borders: the realities for asylum seekers from the sea to Athens.” In this discussion, Iason, alongside the other panelists, will reflect on the multiple challenges that people in the asylum process have faced whilst within the Greek borders, from the moment they disembark on the islands through their journey into the city of Athens. The panel discussion will be facilitated by Chryssa Mela, Humanity in Action Senior Fellow who participated in the 2019 John Lewis program. She and Iason worked together in order to help conceptualize this public awareness event.

The discussion is organized by Khora, an Athens-based community-led, grassroots organization committed to supporting asylum seekers in Greece. Khora is premised on the belief that everyone should have autonomy, choice, dignity, community and the basic means to live in their city. Kora’s experience in supporting asylum seekers in Athens, has demonstrated that many people’s rights are not being met when they arrive in Greece.

The experts of the panel are:
