Landecker Democracy Fellow Catherine Neilan’s podcast Making Common Ground launched in January 2021. Catherine, a journalist who currently serves as Politics Live Editor at the Telegraph, created this podcast with the goal of creating in-depth conversations amongst different groups of people.

Throughout the month of April, Catherine has launched the total of four new episodes of Making Common Ground.

In episode 15, Catherine speaks to Miriam Juan-Torres, global senior researcher at More In Common, about polarization in Britain, shared values among disparate groups and why, even after Brexit, it might not be such a divided society. (Listen: Apple | Spotify)

A new Making Common Ground focus group is introduced in episode 16, where they discuss the recent elections, Keir Starmer’s lack of charm and why it matters when he’s up against Boris Johnson, whether the government has its priorities right and the possibility of a second Scottish Independence Referendum. Episode 17, presents Catherine interviewing New Statesman’s Dominic Ponsford and Broadcast magazine’s Chris Curtis about journalism’s role in post-Brexit polarization, trust in the media and why GB News is not something for progressives to fear. (Listen: Apple | Spotify)

In the final April episode – episode 18 – Catherine returns to the Making Common Ground focus group to discuss meritocracy and whether Labor is the party for aspirations, how to have open and honest conversations and a surprise meeting of minds on Brexit. (Listen: Apple | Spotify)

Catherine is one of thirty Landecker Democracy Fellows.
