Senior Fellow Allister Chang wrote a piece for The DC Line on how Washington, DC is facing a unique opportunity to use federal money for teacher training to support student literacy. Allister argues that it is crucial to invest more in professional development for teachers and enable structured literacy training. After outlining the shortcomings of DC’s education systems – and the factors contributing to DC’s consistently low literacy outcome rankings – he concludes: “The 2021 plan offers a new opportunity. We should learn from our mistakes, adapt promising practices from other states, and invest in our schools’ greatest assets: teachers.”
