Announcing the Winners of the Second Annual "Let's Get Down to Work!" Grant Competition

On November 5th, 2010, an event was held at the US Embassy in Warsaw to celebrate the winners of the second edition of "Let's Get Down to Work!," an annual grant competition, which is a joint effort of HIA Poland and the U.S. Embassy in Poland to develop compelling projects for the promotion of human rights and the protection of minorities.

First prize was awarded to the team of Katarzyna WrzesiƄska, Johanne Luzyn, Agnieszka Skoneczna and Marta Sykut, for there project called "When I Fall Silent, Silent Falls the World," which raises public awareness about the culture and heritage of Roma people, and aims to provide important information regarding the segregation and deportation of Roma from Europe to Kosovo and other places.

Second prize went to Daniel Jezierski and David Liebers, for their project, "Voices from Poland: Developing an Oral History of Polish Minority Perspectives," which is focused on interviewing members of minority groups on how they see themselves as fitting into Polish society, which is largely homogenous, and how those considered part of the majority are responding to minority visions of Poland and Poland’s future.

HIA Senior Fellows, staff and Board Members were welcomed by Mr. Andrew B. Paul, cultural attaché, and by political officer, Mr. Craig Conway, who presented a short talk comparing the political treatment of minorities in the United States under the Bush and Obama administrations. The talk was followed by a Q&A session and a reception.
