HIA Poland Introduces New Educational Project Focusing on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

NIE/PEŁNO/SPRAWNI: Uprzedż Uprzedzenia! (Looking for the Cure: From Patients to Citizens) was successfully launched on December 10th, 2010, with a panel discussion and a subsequent presentation on the program's goals and structure.

The panel discussion allowed guests to discuss the issues related to the rights of persons with disabilities with some representatives from that community, who for many years have been active as leaders and experts and have been promoting innovative ways of taking action. 

The guests were:

Anita Siemaszko, lawyer - offered an overview of the legislative solutions in regards to people with disabilities in Poland

Małgorzata (Anna) Radziszewska, political scientists - discussed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Marek Sołtys, the Crazy Wheelchair User (as he calls himself ;-) - shared some good practices in regards challenging the negative stereotype of a person with disabilities by grass-root initiatives

The discussion was moderated by Magda Szarota representative of the Association of Women with Disabilities ONE.pl & HIA Poland

In the second half of the meeting Monika Mazur-Rafał, President and Director of HIA Poland, presented the new educational project NIE/PEŁNO/SPRAWNI: Uprzedż Uprzedzenia!/Looking for the Cure: From Patients to Citizens.

The project is an educational initiative which aims to educate young leaders about the rights of people with disabilities & empower young people with disabilities to take action in their communities. The project will include of seminars & workshops as well as the on-line course. The mixture of the methods/topics and target groups makes it the first initiative of that kind in Poland. 

Call for Applications will be announced in January 2011.

The project is sponsored by the EVZ Foundation.
