Humanity in Action Holds Fourth Annual New York Conference

More than 100 attendees gathered on Saturday, October 18 for Humanity in Action’s fourth annual New York Conference.

Held at The New School in Manhattan, the event offered a daylong mix of keynote speakers, hands-on workshops, focus groups, discussions and social activities. As Humanity in Action’s largest American event of the year, the New York Conference serves as an invaluable opportunity for American Senior Fellows to reconnect and remain engaged with the Humanity in Action community and its mission.

This year’s conference explored the theme of cities and human rights in urban environments. Some highlights from the day included:

  • Gustavo Rivera, New York State Senator from The Bronx, delivered a keynote address on income inequality and community organizing.
  • Representatives from The Moth, a renowned NYC-based nonprofit, ran a workshop on the power of storytelling as a tool to shape ideas.
  • Casey Gerald, a Senior Fellow, presented on his trailblazing organization MBAs Across America (see this recent New York Times profile for more information).
  • Kristen Clarke, Bureau Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau of the New York Attorney General's Office, discussed the role of activism in the modern civil rights movement.

The day closed with a rousing panel on the diverse work of Senior Fellows. Attendees heard from a poet and activist (Alok Vaid-Menon), an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut (Marc Silverman) and the head of the Office of Workforce Partnerships at the City University of New York (Nikki Evans). The panel was moderated with great verve by Justin Krebs of Living Liberally.

Humanity in Action will share podcasts from the New York Conference in the days ahead.

Thank You
