Livecast 'Reinventing Democratic Spaces': Amsterdam Action Academy

Details

Article

As a part of the Alfred Landecker Democracy Fellowship, Humanity in Action The Netherlands hosted a multi-day virtual training, the Amsterdam Action Academy. The first of five day was on May 5th, the 76th anniversary of Liberation Day. On this day, 76 years ago, the Netherlands was liberated from German occupation.

The Action Academy started with a virtual cooking session of “Freedom Meal Soup,” a Dutch celebration and symbol of “Freedom.” During this time, Fellows discussed the concept of Freedom in different societies today.

Later in the day, Humanity in Action, in collaboration with Pakhuis de Zwijger, hosted a Livecast on the topic of “Reinventing Democratic Spaces.” Four Landecker Fellows, Tomasz Cebulski, Lievnath Faber, Zawdie Sandvliet, and Asha Iman Veal came together to discuss democratic spaces and building community. The discussion started with an introduction of the Alfred Landecker Democracy Fellowship by Laura Lasance, Executive Director of Humanity in Action The Netherlands, before the four Fellows discussed pressing issues that they have encountered in their own activism.

The Alfred Landecker Democracy Fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building. Oy Vey Acts

Authors: Lievnath Faber, The Netherlands, 2021

Landecker Democracy Fellow Lievnath Faber works on co-creating a Jewish hub, Oy Vey, in the city center of Amsterdam, right in the middle of the former Jewish quarter. Lievnath’s idea is to create a lasting connection between the Jewish activists and the broader activist community in The Netherlands, specifically in Amsterdam. This will create a civic revolution against populist, nationalist, and racist forces in our society who benefit from the current antagonism between these communities.
