Article

Since its origins, democracy has been a work in progress. Today, many question its resilience. The Bertelsmann Foundation and Humanity in Action have teamed up with Andrew Keen, author of How to Fix the Future, to launch How to Fix Democracy: a video and podcast series exploring practical responses to the threats facing democracies around the world. Host Andrew Keen interviews prominent thinkers, writers, politicians, technologists, and business leaders who enlighten and challenge us as we seek the answers to How to Fix Democracy.

Host Andrew Keen joins Ralph Nader, consumer advocate, lawyer, author and former US Presidential candidate.

The other 1% | Ralph Nader believes that democracy is about civic organization, not just public opinion. He remarks that the US needs “a third and fourth and fifth party” in our political system – as well as an end to gerrymandering and the electoral college – in order to achieve “a competitive democracy that gives more voices and choices to the voters.” Having made a career on circumventing big business control in Washington, Nader urges Americans to put the focus on Congress, which he believes is the most powerful branch of government. It will only take a concerted effort from 1% of the population to push major change, Nader claims. He reminds the public that there is something that politicians want more than money from special interests: your vote.
