Legal Heroes in the Trump Era

Article

What are some lessons we can learn from people who successfully challenged the erosion of the rule of law during the Trump Administration? What is the most effective response when democracy and rule of law are endangered? Are there ongoing challenges to be addressed now that the Trump Administration has ended? These and more questions were discussed at our book talk with author and immigration attorney Tahmina Watson.

What are some lessons we can learn from people who successfully challenged the erosion of the rule of law during the Trump Administration? What is the most effective response when democracy and rule of law are endangered? Are there ongoing challenges to be addressed now that the Trump Administration has ended?

The Trump administration brought an onslaught of policies that actively undermined civil, human and constitutional rights. Lawyers played an important part in protest and active resistance on a local and national level. Tahmina Watson’s new book, Legal Heroes in the Trump Era, showcases 14 activist lawyers who worked tirelessly to take on the immense tasks of challenging these policies. They are ordinary people who took steps of extraordinary courage, creativity and leadership to challenge policies they viewed as morally reprehensible and endangering our democracy. Tahmina, an immigration attorney herself, lends an insightful perspective, which merges the personal narratives of 14 unsung legal heroes and the lessons we can all learn to confront the larger democratic crisis. The time for action is not over.

Legal Heroes in the Trump Era provides examples of what we can do when democracy is endangered, not only for lawyers but for anyone who would like to formulate strategies for a meaningful response when the rule of law is threatened, whether it is in the courts or through grassroots community work.

A book not only for lawyers but for anyone who would like to formulate strategies for a meaningful response when the rule of law is threatened, whether it is in the courts or through grassroots community work.
