Humanity in Action Poland at "The Largest Minority - How to talk about Disability" Meeting

Article

People with disabilities are the largest social minority in the world. They are also one of the most discriminated social groups. What can we do to change it? On December 9th, the day before Human Rights Day, the “Social Organizations. It works!” Campaign organized a get-together on this topic for people in the third sector. This gathering was a part of a series of meetings by Kuba Wygnański called “Breakfast and Talking”.

We were a partner of this initiative and shared our perspectives as an organization experienced in intersectional activism, specifically in the fields of disability and human rights.

We also discussed the need to change the language habits and other aspects of the social model of disability that can reinforce anti-discrimination activities against people with disabilities.

The host of the meeting, Kuba Wygnański, as well as the following experts: Monika Dubiel, Justyna Lipko-Konieczna, Majka Lipiak, Tomasz Przybysz-Przybyszewski, Maria Reimann, Izabela Sopalska-Rybak and Magda Szarota took part in a panel discussion, which was moderated by Monika Mazur-Rafał, the president of HIA Polska.

We want to send a big thanks to the “Social Organizations. It works!” Campaign and everyone who came to the meeting, as well as organizations such as: the Culture Without Barriers Foundation, Theatre 21, Kulawa Warszawa, The Integration, Work from Bed, The Warsaw House under the Fountain, Mary and Max Association, Social Cooperative WOLA, Batory Foundation.
