Orange the World - Haarlem

In 2018 Senior Fellow Alida Lianne Cluistra worked in a foundation to address and inform the public about sexual abuse and empower them to support victims of these crimes. Alida has seen a lot of violence directed towards women, which inspired her to bring attention to this phenomena. They worked to address violence against women worldwide, as well as, violence against women in Europe and in the Netherlands.

Orange the World Haarlem is an international campaign against violence against women by the United Nations. They traveled to Haarlem (Netherlands) and tried to generate as much local media attention as possible.

The Sint Bavo church was lighted orange for 10 days: from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women until Human Rights Day. The Sint Bavo church is located on a huge square, where lots of pubs also are located. During the ten days action, they had an information stand to share information, empower others and support victims. They printed their message on coasters and the surrounding pubs used them daily to inform their visitors.

Alida worked to address violence against women worldwide, as well as, violence against women in Europe and in the Netherlands.

As a foundation specialized in sexual violence, Zonta Kennemerland, a worldwide women organization, were a well-informed partner for this project. Zonta Kennemerland started the project and Orange the World – Haarlem joined. Alida joined and supported how she could, by organizing the opening ceremony, preparing a speech for the opening ceremony, sharing information with passerbys in the central market square and organizing the public relations in their network.
