Cards of Understanding

Article

‘Cards of Understanding’ is an an interactive game, created by Senior fellow Ivana Kulić and EDVACAY fellow Emir Zukić in cooperation with Senior fellow Mahir Sijamija, focused on women’s rights, that educate the players about the problem of privilege and shows them how different forms of discrimination occur to different groups of women in different societies. This game is conceptualized to show how much of an impact the identity and belonging to different groups can have on opportunities for employment, education, political participation etc.

In addition to the specific problem of privilege, the project also points to the ubiquitous problem of violating women’s rights in everyday life and systemic discrimination against different identities.

The long-term vision of this project is to create awareness of how systemic discrimination affects women differently depending on their identity, origin and class status.

The project itself is conceived in the form of a card game. It will consist of two decks, one of which will represent different groups of women, and the other will contain description of everyday situations. After choosing and combining the cards, players will begin the discussion about what types of discrimination can women experience during a given situation. The cards will be accompanied by a game-guide based on the facts about a particular group of women and the most common form of discrimination/violence they experience in everyday situations. The guide will also provide information data on the types of discrimination that  different groups of women experiences, and through conversation players will see how discrimination manifests itself, what are the consequences of this discrimination, and how the situation would be different if it were happening someone else. Data for the game-guide will be collected through organizations that have have the necessary statistics gathered through several years of experience in the field of protection of women’s rights and discrimination.
