Our community takes action to defend democratic values around the world. Explore our Fellows' Action Projects here.
In the 11 months following the on-site or virtual Fellowship program, our Fellows work on their Action Project: an independent venture focused on promoting democratic values in their own communities. Action Projects are as diverse as Humanity in Action Fellows. Fellows apply their new knowledge and perspectives to the communities they impact—in whatever format they find meaningful. The Humanity in Action community is a great resource for getting support—be it with contacts, experience or good advice. Boston Busing Blues
Landecker Democracy Fellow Wilhemina’s project is an oral history account of the forced busing and desegregation of the Boston Public School system; the resistance of white parents to having their schools admit students of color; and the moment of racial rapture, which has become unacknowledged within the cultural and institutional memories of the city.
Landecker Democracy Fellow Florin recognized the need for resources to empower citizens to create actionable change in Romania. This is how the project Civistarter began — a series of events where representatives of the youth could learn how to be more civically involved.
Landecker Democracy Fellow Elisabeth Becker Topkara’s project, Inscribing Plurality, unites young Jews and Muslims (age 18-25) who live in Berlin and are interested in a career in journalism/writing to pen both their future and the future of our society together.
We got this! The Feminist Hackathon
Anna Bednarczyk is a sociologist and a researcher and is currently developing a PhD project about feminist movements and a concept of safety in Argentina at the Graduate School for Social Research in Warsaw. She holds an MA in sociology and in Sustainable Urban Governance and Peace.
Kris Coffield is the Executive Director of Imua Alliance, a non-profit victim service provider for survivors of human trafficking located in Honolulu, Hawai’i. For his Landecker Democracy Fellowship project, Platforming Peace, Kris is convening ten activists affected by violence in order to reclaim digital space as a site for organizing peace and collaboration, rather than discrimination and social decay.
Welcoming New Residents in Gdansk
Kacper seeks to create a structured, well-planned, coherent program based on support to new residents of Gdansk who resettled in the city after fleeing unsafe home countries; in particular, those who have fled Belarus since August 2020. Kacper seeks to involve local community members, which would allow for Belarusians' integration within local community as well as strengthened Belarusian-Polish relations in Gdansk.
Understanding Past & Present Migration in Greece
Sebene’s Landecker Democracy Fellowship project aims to promote social cohesion and tackle xenophobia in Greece by fostering a public discussion about the importance of migration in our society and by giving more positive visibility to migrant communities.
