When: March 19-21 and October 15-17, 2015
Where: New York and Detroit
Who's eligible: Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and 2014 Fellows who have completed a bachelor’s degree and are residing in the United States
The Philanthropy and Social Enterprise Fellowship offered a small number of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows the opportunity to explore the role of philanthropists and social entrepreneurs in two quintessentially American cities: New York and Detroit.
Participants traveled to Detroit to meet the philanthropic and business leaders who have made an enormous impact on the city in recent years. Senior Fellows then conducted independent research for a six-month period and reconvened in New York for the program’s conclusion.
The story of philanthropy and innovation amid Detroit’s ruin and revitalization is the inspiration for the program. Senior Fellows explored the remarkable actions of philanthropic leaders and social innovators during Detroit’s bankruptcy, including the unprecedented efforts to fund municipal pensions and save the city’s art collection.
