HIA programs are designed to promote and facilitate an ongoing, trans-Atlantic and intra-European dialog about the challenges that democratic societies encounter as they experience new degrees and forms of diversity. The goal is to reinforce the HIA Fellows' commitment to democratic values and human rights; to encourage American and European students to become leaders in these fields; and to foster a growing international community bound together by these commitments.

Relevance of the Holocaust Program
Fellowship Programs
HIA Fellowship Programs in Denmark, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, and the United States provide the initial foundation for participation in HIA and the basis for highly effective individual and collaborative action. The content of the fellowship programs reflects the specific histories and present challenges of each host country. All programs focus on histories and theories of resistance to legal and institutional abuse of minority populations and the development of international human rights institutions and doctrines after World War II and the Holocaust.
Each fellowship program is divided into two phases. During the first phase, recognized leaders of human rights organizations, politicians, diplomats, philanthropists, journalists, scholars, artists and authors meet with the Fellows during three-and-a-half weeks of intensive seminars, site visits, and focus group activities. Each program culminates in a period of research and writing. International teams of Fellows focus on past and present minority issues in their host country, producing a written report. HIA publishes these reports on its website and a selected number of these reports in its annual Reports of the Fellows (click here to see 2007 research reports).
HIA Fellows are expected to put their knowledge into practice. Following the summer programs, Fellows implement plans for engaging human rights or minority issues in their home institutions or communities (click here to read about some Action Plans executed by HIA Fellows from the US).
Internships
Prestigious international internships are available to fellows who have successfully completed one of the core fellowship programs. HIA offers internships at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the U.S. House of Representatives, the European Parliament, Interpol, and others. New internship opportunities are continually being developed to accommodate growing demand (click here to view a list of HIA internship programs).
Relevance of the Holocaust Program
Organized by Humanity in Action Nederland in cooperation with HIA Poland, applicants are invited for a special one-week program on the
Relevance of the Holocaust. Fellows will participate in a two-day
pre-departure meeting conducted by their local HIA office before
traveling to Krakow for the 7-day program. The program will focus on
the history of anti-Semitism in Poland and Europe, a visit to
Auschwitz, the impact of the Holocaust on contemporary European
national identities, and anti-Semitism in the 21st century. Following
the program, participants will develop and implement an action plan on
the Holocaust oriented to educating young people.
