YOUR COUNTRY OF PARTICIPATION
You are guaranteed a Fellowship in Denmark, France, Germany, The Netherlands or Poland, but not in any specific country. HIA will only select your destination after you have confirmed your acceptance of the HIA Fellowship. This designation is made by the HIA staff in order to achieve a complementary mix of Fellows in each program.

Many Fellows ask if they may state a preference for a specific country program. Please contact us by email if you have a particular request, but it is important to note that preferences are only considered in rare circumstances. HIA has found that students with deep knowledge of a country and those who are new to a country equally benefit from and contribute to country programs.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
All HIA programs are conducted in English, so language skills are not a consideration when deciding your country of participation.

COSTS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
HIA will pay for all of programmatic expenses during your Fellowship, including local travel, housing, some food, and the activities of the programs. We will not cover non-programmatic expenses. Therefore, we suggest that you bring at least $500 for incidentals and fun.

As the application indicated, you are responsible for funding your travel to and from Europe. Please be prepared to reserve travel tickets as soon as we notify you of your program country.

For those unable to afford the cost of international airfare, HIA will provide travel stipends for Fellows with documented need. However, HIA requires those requesting financial assistance to look first to other potential sources of funding, including their college or university financial aid office, private grants, frequent flier miles, and friends and relatives before relying on HIA.

Should you need further assistance, HIA will provide a stipend to make up the difference between what you are able to raise and the approximate cost of direct travel to your program country.

To apply for the stipend, please read further instructions on our website at http://www.humanityinaction.org/apply/usa/stipend and submit your formal request to HIA no later than April 15 at http://www.humanityinaction.org/apply/usa/request.

MAKING FLIGHT RESERVATIONS
HIA will be sending you a detailed message about making flight reservations. It is very important that you wait until receiving this information before you purchase your airfare.

YOUR HOUSING IN EUROPE
For those who will participate in the Fellowship Programs in Denmark, France, Germany, or The Netherlands, you will be living with a host family. The pairing of Fellows and host families will not take place until shortly before you arrive in Europe. Those participating in the Polish program will stay together in a hostel in downtown Warsaw.

You will not be able to move into your housing before June 3, 2010.

PASSPORT AND VISA REQUIREMENTS
All U.S. citizens should check their passports to make sure that they will be valid through December 3, 2010. Those who are not U.S. citizens and will need a visa must apply as soon as HIA notifies you about your country of participation.

For questions about visas, please contact HIA staff as soon as possible.

HEALTH, MEDICAL, AND PERSONAL CONCERNS
HIA provides emergency medical coverage for the duration of your Fellowship, but we strongly recommend that you take out your own temporary plan if you do not already have medical insurance.

Fellows will receive a questionnaire about regarding health, medical, dietary and other personal concerns before the beginning of the program.

DRESS CODE AND PACKING
You are strongly advised to travel light.

HIA does not have a dress code, however Fellows should be respectful of the other cultures to which they will be traveling and the people with whom they will be engaging and living. Fellows may also be attending formal receptions and banquets. The men should therefore bring a jacket and tie, and women should bring appropriate clothing for those events.

With regards to weather, the five European countries can have unpredictable whether during June, sometimes cool and rainy and sometimes quite hot. Please bring clothing suitable for both conditions, including a raincoat or sturdy umbrella.

HIA ACTION PROJECT
An HIA Action Project is an outreach initiative inspired by the ideas and models of action presented in HIA fellowship programs. The project can represent many different forms of action—from public lectures and policy advocacy to service projects and social entrepreneurship. The Action Project is meant for you to apply what you have learned in your fellowship to real-life issues in your home communities or abroad.

HIA requires you to complete your Action Project in the year after your Fellowship.

HIA CONDUCT POLICY
HIA reserves the right for its program directors, at any time during the program, to ask a Fellow to leave the program if his or her behavior does not conform to the standards of the program or for failure to participate. Such action is taken very rarely, and never without advance warning.
