Humanity in Action Germany e. V. was founded in 2001 as the fourth partner organization within the HIA network.

HIA Germany held its first HIA Fellowship program in the summer of 2002 for university students from Germany and the United States.  HIA Germany has led initiatives to include students from Central and Eastern European countries in the HIA Fellowship and to develop the Pat Cox-HIA Fellowship in the European Parliament.

In close cooperation with the German Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future" (EVZ), HIA Germany also helped expand the HIA Fellowship to Warsaw in 2006. After a start-up phase of three years, HIA Poland was officially founded as an independent organization in 2009.
